NEW - Paul Vladuchick

September 26, 2018

It has been a whirl-wind September. The wife and I went over to Europe for a wonderful vacation which took up most of the month and now am in the process of editing the images. I've been posting them to their own gallery.

Tonight I had a chance to go and shoot downtown again for the first time in almost a month. I really missed it. Pittsburgh is such a beautiful city.

2018 Europe

September 3, 2018

The last few weeks have been very busy and I've neglected updating the blog. Sorry about that.

Several new photos, several new dance galleries. It's been  a busy few weeks.

August 21, 2018

For the Love of Bachata has the last outdoor event tonight at the Southside Works. The weather was threatening rain (and I believe it did rain before I was able to arrive). Many thanks to Jessica for all of her hard work in organizing these events. They are always a blast.

August 18, 2018

I had a free Saturday night (which is rare) and I headed downtown to try and get a few shots I've been meaning to take for some time, but finally found the angle I wanted to try.

August 16, 2018

I got to do some late night photographing around the city. Most of the places I wanted to scope out didn't work out - which is a shame as they COULD have been really awesome. I'll see if I can try again with different traffic, lighting, etc.

What I did get was this shot of the K&L Gates Building from VERY close up. I like the perspective and lighting.

August 14, 2018

When the announcer on the radio said that the Fort Pitt bridge would be closed from 10 PM on I knew I had to try to get the bridge lit up by all the headlights as the poor folks had to contend with the horrendous traffic jam. The traffic jam was ugly. The bridge, lit up, was pretty fantastic.

August 13, 2018

After I edited the image of the highway and city from yesterday I noticed a hint of camera-shake in the image (you have to look really close to real see it) and figured I should try to reshoot it and get a better shot. I headed down tonight to the same location and attempted to shoot it again.

I think I nailed it. The clouds were perfect, the image is razor sharp. I'm really happy with this one. It MIGHT be my favorite so far. MIGHT.

August 12, 2018

I got a chance to go and take a few photos in downtown Pittsburgh.

August 12, 2018

This has been a really busy weekend.

Wightman School - Thursday Night

Mariposa Ballroom - Friday Night

Pittsburgh Ballroom - Saturday Night

August 10, 2018

After processing, reprocessing, losing everything in a program crash, reprocessing and not liking it and giving up and going to bed, then the next day processing it again, I finally finished this image. It didn't take long the last time I edited it. :-P

August 7 , 2018

For the Love of Bachata had it's third dance at Southside Works again. We had blast, you know, as usual. :-)

August 5, 2018

Sunday night. Tomorrow I have to go back to work. This week looks like it's going to be very busy with lots of opportunities to venture out and get more photos. It also appears that a thunderstorm or two may be rolling through. I'd love to try and get another storm photo. This has been a very quiet summer for good thunderstorms.

I had found a spot on the side of a cliff overlooking Rt 51 south of the city that looked promising for a decent vantage point for the West End Bridge looking towards the Northside. After looking at several maps I found a hiking trail that passed very close to the location. I found it. The hike wasn't too bad (in fact, it was a LOT shorter than I had planned) but it was relatively hilly.

August 4, 2018

Amore Dance Club held their monthly dance at the Coraopolis VFW. We had a really big crowd. Cathy did the lesson (WCS) and MB Entertainment did the DJing. The AC was acting up and it was a bit warner than we are use to. Hot Yoga? Nope. Hot Ballroom. :-)

August 2, 2018

The Pittsburgh Arthur Murray Dance Studio has decided to put on a Thursday night Salsa dance at a local establishment Oliver Or Twist. I was there with my camera and had a blast.

August 1, 2018

I had the chance to go downtown and grab some shots of the buildings. Instead of going to places I've been before, I opted to go down closer to the jail and grab a photo of the Highmark building from down 5th Ave.

July 29, 2018

This has been a really busy week and I've been posting, just not updating the blog.

On Friday 27 Studio 101 opened and Amanda had her Grand Opening. The floor was fantastic. The practice room was really awesome and the general space is quite fantastic.

On Saturday 28, "For the Love of Bachata" had their Mt. Washington dance on the overlooks on Grandview Ave.  We had a fantastic crowd and the weather was fantastic. So many photos. So tired.

Studio 101

For the Love of Bachata - Mt. Washington

July 21, 2018

Every time I go and get a sunrise I realize that I am, in absolutely no way, a morning person. Still, I LOVE actually BEING up and capturing the sunrise. I got down to Mt. Washington about 20 minutes before sunrise and set up. A few minutes before a giant cloud bank started rolling in really fast and I decided to try putting on my 10 stop neutral density filter and try to capture the motion of the clouds. I couldn't get the exposure quite right as I could either get the clouds OR the sun so I took a few of each.

July 17, 2018

There is a lot I want to say about this image. It speaks volumes to me. I want to know if I'm the only one.

July 16, 2018

Tonight's image didn't work out as I had intended. This happens more often that not actually. I had planned on going down to the Southside of Pittsburgh and getting some awesome shots of the city with what the NOAA promised to be some thunderstorms that were inbound. That didn't work out. The angles didn't work out. The sun was STILL in the wrong position. The temperature was too hot and the straps on my camera bag were hurting my sunburned shoulders.

Then I took this one. I think it came out pretty nice.

July 15, 2018

This was a busy weekend with two dances. First was Cathy Kelly's Mariposa Ballroom's Two Year Anniversary party which was so much fun I nearly forgot to take any photos. That's kind of embarrassing, but it was totally a blast.

Then on Saturday Pittsburgh Ballroom had it's months dance at the Palisades in McKeesport. We had a great time with a lot of people.

July 11, 2018

I got a chance to go back down to the fountain at Point State Park in downtown Pittsburgh.

I got many excellent photos, stay tuned.

July 10, 2018

For the Love of Bachata invades the South Side Works. So much fun dancing outdoors and the weather cooperated with temperatures not too crazy and no thunderstorms and sideways rain, which is always nice. :-)

July 5, 2018

Several months ago now I captured a photo of PNC Park a few days before the season opener. It was dark and raining and quite cold. The rain gave the image incredible atmosphere. I wanted to see if I could shoot it again, this time during the day.  I think this one worked out pretty well. Notice that I didn't have my tripod this time so I placed my camera on the edge of the walkway on the ground to capture the necessary images.

July 4th, 2018

I had a chance to go downtown and grab some shots in the morning. I tried to get up to get the sunrise, but a lack of clouds were going to make the sunrise a bit unimpressive. I fell back asleep (until 5 AM) and decided I could get some shots of the city in the morning light.

I got several shots which I will be sharing over the next few days. This one was taken at the Allegheny Landing park just upstream of PNC Ballpark.

June 28, 2018

A few nights ago I went downtown and noticed that the bay doors were open on the City of Pittsburgh River Safety Center. So I grabbed a photo. I like how the sky and water turned out.

June 26, 2018

I fell behind on the blog portion even though I have posted a few images since the Demidov Dance Showcase.

I had the chance to go down to the 16th street bridge and try out a few ideas for images. None of them worked, unfortunately, but the moon had risen and was at the right angle to capture it and the globe on the foundations. This is a hand held shot that I think came out pretty good. The trick was to try and get the exposure balanced (so the moon wasn't overexposed too much, but the bridge wasn't underexposed too much either).

On Sunday after the rainstorm and a missed opportunity to capture a rainbow over the city I got a shot of the North Side. I like this image a lot.

Last night I got a chance to shoot from the North Shore and, while trying NOT to get the SAME image of the Roberto Clemente Bridge, I managed to get a shot of the Fort Duquesne Bridge that I really liked.

June 16, 2018

Demidov Dance had their first Showcase at Alumni Hall in Oakland. I was hired to photograph the event and we had a blast. So much energy, so much attitude. It was an excellent presentation.

June 15, 2018

This is going to be a crazy weekend. It's been crazy weekend already and it's only Friday. But! I had a chance to get a few photos of the city from the North Shore and I jumped at the chance. I like this view a lot.

June 12, 2018

The rain cleared and I was able to go down to Washington Landing for a few minutes to try and get another shot of the city. It was a beautiful night if only a bit windy. The reflections on the water as the sun set were really beautiful and I tried to capture the incredible blue-ness of the scene.

June 10, 2018

It rained. I went to get a photo of the city from the bridge at Washington Landing but it was raining too hard for what I wanted. I tried a few other things and tried to wait it out. I got drenched. I got this shot instead. I like it even though it wasn't exactly what I was going for.

June 9, 2018

Pittsburgh Ballroom held their monthly dance at the Lauri Ann West community center. I was exhausted from the previous night at Absolute and didn't take as many photos as I normally do. Still, we had a blast (as usual).

June 8, 2018

Absolute Ballroom - a pillar in the Dance community in Pittsburgh is closing as Beth is retiring. We had a surprise party for her and it was wonderful, albeit bittersweet. We are going to miss Absolute Ballroom, the community that was there was fantastic between all kinds of different dance styles. With many thanks, we miss Beth all the happiness and wellness in her retirement.

June 6, 2018

Tonight was the first time I was able to go out and take some photos around the city. Actually, I was only able to go to one location. I got two photos that I think are real keepers.  The weather was quite nice, but the more I shoot in the nice weather, the more I think I like the freezing cold. I think it has to do with the clarity of the air at those temperatures. Still, I really like how these came out.

June 1, 2018

Last night was the Three Diamond Dancesport dance social at the Pittsburgh International Airport Hyatt. Photos were taken. Friends were danced with. We had a good time.

May 30, 2018

This is another two shots of the sunrise from Memorial Day. I really like the fog on the river with the fire-colored river. I just like that color I suppose.

May 28, 2018

Happy Memorial Day everyone. This morning I woke up to go down to try and capture a foggy sunrise over the city. It wasn't as foggy as I was hoping but the sunrise was pretty nice. The sky exploded with colors and the reflection on the river was really nice.

May 26, 2018

The ballroom dance at the Cranberry Community center was last night and we had a really wonderful time. Cathy always plays the best music and always puts on a great dance. Lots of fantastic people, lots of great dances. It was good.

Now I'm exhausted. :-)

May 21, 2018

The photos of the Pittsburgh Practice Dance from Sunday are up! We went to Demidov Dance in Fox Chapel and had a really wonderful time.

May 20, 2018

Another photo I took while down at the West End Bridge. I really like this shot with the texture of the bridge, clouds, water and city. I think it works pretty well.

May 18, 2018

Orchard Hill Church held their bi-monthy dance and it was a blast as always.

May 16, 2018

The West End Bridge is the only bridge in the Pittsburgh Valley that looks the way it does. It's very tall and the truss structure is really interesting.

Photos

May 15, 2018

After several days of not being able to go downtown or take any photos really at all, I was able to make it down just in time for a MASSIVE thunderstorm. I waited it out and I'm glad I did. The clouds were quite dynamic. I got several I'll be sharing over the next few days.

May 12, 2018

Pittsburgh Ballroom held their monthly dance at the Coraopolis VFW. As always it was an excellent crowd and good music. I was really exhausted from this past week and so I didn't do as much dancing as I normally do. I think the images came out pretty good.

May 11, 2018

*** PRICE LIST UPDATE ****

May 11, 2018

After several days of non stop goings on, I kinda hit a wall. So I'm doing ok, but recuperating and will be back at full strength in a few days. In the mean time, I realized I forgot to share an image I took a few weeks back from the North Side of Pittsburgh.

May 8, 2018

I LOVE SPRING. I love the flowering trees. I love the spring scent in the air.

May 6, 2018

A few days ago I was going through some of my old photos and found this one from my trip to Copenhagen back in 2016. It was a dreary day but the city was gorgeous.

May 6, 2018

This weekend has been intense. I photographed the Pittsburgh Concert Choral concert last night and then a wedding today. I'll be showing some of these images over the next few weeks as I process them. Until then, here is a shot of the Point State Park fountain that I took a few days ago.

May 5, 2018

Orchard Hill Church always puts on a wonderful dance (hosted by Bobby D). Tonight we had a good crowd and had an absolute blast. So much so that I didn't take too many photos.

May 4, 2018

I decided to post another image, this time of the fountain at Point State Park. Also this time, looking away from the sunset and towards the city. Which view do you prefer? I tend to like the sunset one, but I really like both the hues of blue and the texture of the water in the fountain pool.

May 4, 2018

Spring is finally here. The flowering tree in front of work is incredible.

May 3, 2018

A few nights ago I went down to the Point and took some photos. One of the images I've been trying to figure out how to capture is of the Fort Pitt Museum right next to the Fort Pitt Bridge on the banks of the Monongahela River. After looking at various locations on the south shore, I figured I could see what an image with the bridge in the background instead of the foreground. This is the first results and while I like it a lot, I think I can do better and will be trying again shortly. Any feedback is always encouraged. Either comment on the photo of shoot me an email using the "contact" form.

May 2, 2018

There is a magical 20 minutes or so between the sun setting and the darkness of night. Some photographers refer to this time as blue-hour and it may be my favorite time to shoot outdoors. The blue is all enveloping with the bright highlights from gold from the Roberto Clemente bridge.

May 1, 2018

Happy Mayday everyone. Spring is in the air and the temperature feels glorious. Tonight I went down to the point to try to capture an image of the fountain. I arrived just too late to get the one the image I wanted, but waited for the light to change enough to capture this one. I was happy how this came out despite the lack of upper layer clouds to reflect the orange and red sunset light. I think this came out pretty well.

April 30, 2018

This is a photo of downtown that I took back in middle of April after the cold finally (maybe?) ended and the temperatures were a bit warmer.

I love the way the city looks through a long zoom: the depth of the image gets compressed and the buildings all look like they're on top of each other. I think this is a really cool view of the Rachel Carson Bridge too. I wish I would have found this location before the lights came down on the RC bridge. This would have been awesome with the lights.

April 28, 2018

Cathy Kelly held her dance at the Cranberry Community Center. It was a huge crowd. Excellent Music. Great people. We really had a great time.

I got  few photos.

April 27, 2018

While walking downtown I looked up and saw the Gulf Tower between the buildings and the moon and fast moving clouds and then this photo happened.

I love Art Deco. I don't really know why.

April 26, 2018

We finally have a decent sunset in which I was able to get out and try to capture. It wasn't a great sunset, but a sunset none the less. It's been a while since I captured a decent sunset and I'm pretty sure this one qualifies. At least somewhat.

Fort Pitt Bridge at Sunset. The superstructure of the bridge is fantastic with all the pylons for the off ramps and the sunset warm orange glow behind it and the blue/gray skies in front of the bridge. I really like this one. A lot. I will most likely be going back down to this location again and trying again.

April 25, 2018

Tonight I went down to the North Side where I was trying to find a few new angles to get the city further up the Allegheny. I saw this. I have always been a critic of the Veterans bridge as it is modern and has little character unlike the gorgeous 16th street bridge upstream and bridges downstream. This angle, I like. I think this one works. The bridge itself has no soul, but perhaps the roadway, in some strange way, may have some character.

April 24, 2018

I was going to try and capture some dusk photos of the city when I stumbled upon this rose that was wedged into the concrete blocks on the North Shore of the Allegheny across from Point State Park with a note saying "Michael loved this place. May he rest in peace"

April 21, 2018

I really like the juxtaposition of this image. On the one side, buildings that are about a century old. Front and Center is the 616 foot tall Highmark building (completed in 1988) with its 124 foot tall pyramid roof and blue spire. Penn Ave running into the distance and on the right side, a completely new construction (or complete renovation).

April 20, 2018

Orchard Hill Church in Wexford PA hosts a biweekly Friday night ballroom dance that is really a blast. Tonight was no exception.

April 19, 2018

Tonights image comes from a few nights ago when I went downtown. There was a ballgame going on while it was snowing. Baseball. Snow. These things do not go together.

April 18th, 2018

Another shot of the "You are Loved.." message from a much different angle.

April 17, 2018

I went down to the North Shore where someone had stenciled with chalk paint "You are loved more than you know" on a pylon. I don't know how long it will stay there since it's chalk, but I hope anyone who needs to be reminded of this sees it. It is this kind of thing that really makes me proud to live here.

April 16, 2018

Last Thursday while photographing the Fort Pitt bridge I wanted to get a close up of the superstructure of the bridge. I am constantly fascinated by large structures like this, all the engineering and math that was used to build the 1,207 foot long bridge complete with 8000 tons of steel. I wonder how many rivets were used. Someone has to know.

April 14, 2018

Tonight we went to Pittsburgh Ballrooms monthly dance. This month it was held at the Lauri Ann West community center in Fox Chapel. Frank and Victoria did the lesson (WCS) and did the demonstration performance which was really fantastic. I really enjoy how they move with such control and musicality.

April 13, 2018

A few nights ago I had the opportunity to take more night shots around downtown Pittsburgh. I've been meaning to try and get a few decent photos of the Fort Pitt bridge. It's a difficult one to shoot since I don't feel like there isn't any decent locations up the river on either side, but the locations downriver make the bridge look askew. Then I noticed the walkway a few months ago. I had some success getting images from the south side of the bridge, but the city was not ideal, so I tried the north side of the bridge. I think it worked much better. I really like the structure of the bridge and the relatively non-distracting background of Mt. Washington. Also, that apartment building doesn't hurt anything either :-)

April 13, 2018

Last night I was over at Mariposa Ballroom for the Friday Night Dance. We had a really fun time. Cathy always does a great job. If you have ever wanted to get into ballroom dancing I recommend it HIGHLY. It's both so much fun, so challenging and just a blast. The people in our community are absolutely the best: friendly, helpful and just kind in every way.

Dance at Mariposa Ballroom - Slideshow

April 12, 2018

While I was up at St. John's Lutheran Cemetary a few days ago, i noticed an obelisk that appeared to have been stuck by lighting and the track to ground was burnt into the rock. I think this is very, very cool.

April 10, 2018

There is a cemetery north of the city on top of a hill overlooking (mostly) downtown. I went up there a few weeks ago and got a really cool panorama at dusk. See the main view. Photograph it if you wish. Enjoy it. Then look around - most people get too distracted by the main view to enjoy  other, less noticed views. This was one of them.

Saturday, April 7, 2018

On Saturday, quite early in the morning and after a snow that wasn't really expected for April, I decided to head down to the Duquesne Incline and try to get some decent photos of the city and snow. It turns out it was quite windy and entirely and deeply overcast. Still, I think this photo turned out pretty well.

Due to the perspective, this image works as a 8x10 or 16x20
