Sunset and Thunderstorm - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
A thunderstorm moved through the area tonight. From downtown the clouds were really wonderful with the sunset yellow and oranges and on the other side of the thunderclouds, a deep blue. Add in the Incline and the Gateway Clipper and the Point Fountain and I think this is just about the perfect photo of downtown.
Downstream - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
After months of being closed for repairs, the walkway on the Liberty bridge is FINALLY open and I got a chance to walk over it. I think I like how this one turned out. Note the strong lens flare from the street light I was standing right next to.

All day there are these great big, wonderful, fluffy clouds; then comes sunset and they all disappear and it's cloudless. Cloudless. Pittsburgh. These things normally don't go together. But a cloudless sunset is a boring sunset. Tonight's sunset was NOT boring. The sky was on fire.

Gulf Tower - An Engineers Office
I absolutely love the art deco design of the Gulf Tower in downtown Pittsburgh. The details of the building are often overlooked as the lights on top of the building usually draw all of the attention. Tonight however, my attention was drawn to the office lights in the one window. I'd like to think there is an engineer still hard at work on a Sunday night at 11 PM on a holiday weekend. Most likely, however, someone probably forgot to turn the lights off.

Pittsburgh Highway North Bound
Pittsburgh's I-579 highway cuts through downtown in a spaghetti bowl thing. It makes traveling from points north to points east much easier than having to go around the point and having to deal with the two bridges and endless traffic headaches. From this vantage point one can see most of the skyscrapers, convention center, rail bridges, road bridges, Northside, etc.

Sliver Moon Setting - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
This image represents what I love most about landscape photography. You can have all of your plans laid out and have mapped out your locations and times down to the minute, and it turns out to be a total bust.
And then you look over your left shoulder and see this. Totally unexpected, totally not planned and completely happenstance. Sometimes the planned shots don't go as planned. Sometimes the spontaneous, random occurrences work best.

I had tried to capture the freight train derailment near Station Square. I couldn't find an angle I liked, and by accident, I found this scene. I think it came out pretty nicely. I really like how the sun reflects off the top surface of the rails as they disappear into the distance.

Looking Down Fifth Ave - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
I was driving home a few nights ago and happened to look over just as we were passing by 5th Ave and saw this scene. I immediately knew I had to return to try to capture it. While there are some details I want to try and improve, I think this worked out pretty well. The bus just happened to pull up when I had the shutter open and at the time I though it would ruin the shot. I think it adds some really neat motion to the image that wouldn't be there otherwise.

Fort Duquesne Bridge - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
Downtown Pittsburgh has three highway bridges. This is the Fort Duquesne Bridge that was known in the 1960s as the "Bridge to Nowhere" as the north side of the bridge was left incomplete until the ramp right of ways could be figured out legally. It's a beautiful bridge, but I've been having an issue trying to find a decent angle to capture it.

Pittsburgh's North Side at Sunset
A few weeks back I took an image from this exact location at night. Today I wanted to see what would happen if I took it at sunset (or golden hour) after a rainstorm. I used two filters on my lens which allowed me to shoot this at a very slow shutter speed, as a result, you'll notice that there are no visible cars on the highway on the left side of the image.

Dreary Day on the River - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
Rain in Pittsburgh is about as common as it gets. Tonight was a constant rain shower that went on for what seemed to drag on while standing in the middle of it waiting for the clouds, fog and rain to be just right all while getting drenched. The weather didn't cooperate, but I did get drenched. And I got this image instead. The atmosphere is heavy and gray - rain pouring down so much that it sees as heavy, grainy fog.
