The Fountain at the Point - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
The fountain at Point State Park is always a joy to go and watch. I don't know why moving liquid is so fascinating to me, but it is. Photographing moving liquid is both a lot of fun as one doesn't really know what it will look like until you actually see the image. This image I think turned out very well with the subtile blue gray near the top of the main column of water and the sky with the city behind it. I'm so glad spring is here. finally.

Friends Sitting by the Fountain - Point State Park, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
I misplanned tonights shoot and missed the timing by a few minutes. So instead I improvised and got this shot instead. I think it came out pretty well. I really like the two people sitting on the edge of the fountain on the right side of the image.

The Fountain at Night - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
This was one of the first attempts to capture the city and fountain. Some way the colors are too much. I think they're right. I also like them this way. So there. :-)

The Gulf Tower - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
Of all the buildings downtown Pittsburgh, I think the Gulf Tower is my favorite. I absolutely love Art Deco and this is a perfect example of it. A few clouds were blowing by and they streaked across the frame nicely backlit by the nearly full moon.

Old, Modern, New - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
I really like the juxtaposition of this image. On the one side, buildings that are about a century old. Front and Center is the 616 foot tall Highmark building (completed in 1988) with its 124 foot tall pyramid roof and blue spire. Penn Ave running into the distance and on the right side, a completely new construction (or complete renovation).

PNC Park - It's too Cold for Baseball - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
On Tuesday night there was a game at PNC Park. It was cold and snowy (image coming soon) and very few people showed up. Because it was cold. They lost 2-1. I like the image though.

Someone over the previous few days chalk painted stenciled "You are Loved more than you know" on a pylon on the North Shore. Most friendly piece of graffiti i've encountered yet.

The Fineview Neighborhood - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
One of the many awesome things about Pittsburgh is how many neighborhoods there are in and around the city. Each with their own charm, micro-culture and feel. This part of the Fineview neighborhood with the West End overlook, bridge and neighborhood behind it.

Pittsburgh Sunrise. Cloudy. Gray.
Pittsburgh is a cloudy city. Despite the clouds and never-ending gray, the city shines through as one of my most beautiful (though I may be biased) skylines in the country.

Cold and Overcast Sunrise - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
This morning I went down to the Duquesne Incline just before sunrise. The blue hue was quite beautiful. I hope this is the last of the snow cover, though looking at the forecast for next week wouldn't place any bets.

PNC Park - Three Days Before Opening Day
I got the chance to go downtown tonight not really knowing where I was going to shoot. Turns out, PNC park was lit up and they were apparently doing testing of the lights and sound system and even the lights on top of the Highmark building. It was also raining which gave the lights this gorgeous atmospheric-ness that I think turned out pretty well.

Pittsburgh during Twilight
Twilight is a magical time. The lights start to fade and the city starts to light up. The blue in the sky was gorgeous despite the heavy cloud cover. I'm looking forward to reshooting this one in the spring or summer.
I recommend viewing this one as large as you can. The detail is pretty impressive.pittsburghpanoramaskyscraperurbanpittsburghbeautifulcityscapeAppalachiasunsettwilightdark

Rachel Carson Bridge
I was saddened to hear that the art installation is being turned off April 8th. I was very happy to hear that the bridge is then going to be renovated (which I understand it needs quite badly). I'm really hoping they put the lights back up.

The Span of the Roberto Clemente Bridge - Pittsburgh Pennslyvania
This is, without a doubt, one of my favorite bridges in the city. The fact that the city is behind it (as viewed from the North Shore) only helps things. I was hoping to get a cool shot with the snow, but the wind was too strong and the snowflakes were too small to show up as anything other than fog.

International Space Station over Pittsburgh - February 27, 2018
At 5:41 AM the International Space Station flew over Pittsburgh. It was a rare convergence of events: the orbital position was correct, the sun was in the right place, the weather cooperated.
I had miscalculated how high the ISS would fly over and only got a small arc (seen in the upper right of the image). I had a few other glitches that I'll be sure to fix next time. But as a proof of concept, I think this works.ISSflyoverpittsburghpennsylvaniacityskyscraperriverreflectioncolorhighmarkalleghenybridgesrobertoclemente
Pittsburgh Steam - 02/17/2018
The recent flooding of the Allegheny and Mongehelea rivers lead to flooding of the Pittsburgh steam tunnels. The result was a HUGE cloud of steam rising between 6th and 7th Ave between the Heinz and Benedum Concert Halls. It looked like the apocalypse. Beautiful. Haunting. Surreal.

Crossing the River - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
I had the good fortune of capturing the train engine while it was traversing the bridge thus lighting it up for the inside. I also really like the reflections in the water - the river wasn't as reflective as it was a few nights ago, but it was still sufficiently reflective.

Rachel Carson Bridge - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
I took this one around 1 AM when the city becomes very quiet. The wind was still and the turbines weren't moving.
The Rachel Carson bridge is home to an installation of wind turbine powered LED light display. I really like the concept, but I wasn't a fan of the color scheme last night with the yellow on the bridge and the red on the Highmark building. Still, I think this photo works pretty well.rachelcarsonbridgepittsburghhighmarkallenghenyriverpennslyvaniawinter

Roberto Clemente Bridge In the Fog - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
I was passing through the city tonight when I noticed that the fog was heavy enough that the overlook I usually stop at was fogged in. So, instead, I went back down to the bank of the Allegheny River and took another shot of the Roberto Clemente Bridge from the North Shore. I think I'm pretty happy with how this one came out. The river was really smooth yet flowing pretty fast which made for interesting ice streaks.

Monongahela Incline - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
I had the chance to go out for a few hours this evening and get some photos of the city with the goal of not going to the typical North Shore, the overlooks, etc. I think this one fits the bill pretty nicely. The walk down from Mt. Washington was fraught with a very long and relatively steep walkway covered in ice. The view was pretty good.

Pittsburgh Sunrise - January 18, 2018
Sunrise on the West End Overlook. The air temperature was 6 ºF and the wind chill was quite a bit lower than that. The sunrise was beautiful and had I known what I was doing, probably could have gotten a much better photo. As it is, I'm pretty happy with my first attempt.
