Sunset and Thunderstorm - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
A thunderstorm moved through the area tonight. From downtown the clouds were really wonderful with the sunset yellow and oranges and on the other side of the thunderclouds, a deep blue. Add in the Incline and the Gateway Clipper and the Point Fountain and I think this is just about the perfect photo of downtown.

Dreary Day on the River - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
Rain in Pittsburgh is about as common as it gets. Tonight was a constant rain shower that went on for what seemed to drag on while standing in the middle of it waiting for the clouds, fog and rain to be just right all while getting drenched. The weather didn't cooperate, but I did get drenched. And I got this image instead. The atmosphere is heavy and gray - rain pouring down so much that it sees as heavy, grainy fog.

I absolutely love the view of the city from the Northside. It's more unusual than the normal views from the West End or Mt. Washington. I think I like the amount of layering of city.

I love how the light and fog interact between the camera and the horizon. The orange light becomes more and more diffuse until it disappears all together.

Sunrise on the Allegheny River - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
I am not a morning person. I never have been. If (and that's sometimes a HUGE if) I can wake up, I love seeing the sunrise. Today I managed it. This was taken about 5:30 AM from the Overlook Park. The reflections in the water were really wonderful. The fog hadn't completely dissipated yet and just slightly fogged in the city (I was actually hoping for a bit more fog) and then the sky exploded with color.

Aftermath of a Spring Thunderstorm - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
When I left home the rain wasn't even on the radar. When I entered the city limits the rain was pouring down and the city wasn't visible from the North Shore. After about 45 minutes of waiting the rain started to let up and I was able to go out onto the West End Bridge where the clouds were still threatening another downpour.

The Fountain at the Point - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
The fountain at Point State Park is always a joy to go and watch. I don't know why moving liquid is so fascinating to me, but it is. Photographing moving liquid is both a lot of fun as one doesn't really know what it will look like until you actually see the image. This image I think turned out very well with the subtile blue gray near the top of the main column of water and the sky with the city behind it. I'm so glad spring is here. finally.

Friends Sitting by the Fountain - Point State Park, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
I misplanned tonights shoot and missed the timing by a few minutes. So instead I improvised and got this shot instead. I think it came out pretty well. I really like the two people sitting on the edge of the fountain on the right side of the image.

The Gulf Tower - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
Of all the buildings downtown Pittsburgh, I think the Gulf Tower is my favorite. I absolutely love Art Deco and this is a perfect example of it. A few clouds were blowing by and they streaked across the frame nicely backlit by the nearly full moon.

Veterans Bridge - I-579 Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
I-579 is only 1.57 miles long and most of it is probably contained in this image. I've never liked the Veterans bridge, it's too modern with practically zero soul unlike the bridges immediately up and down river from it. But this view is ok.
Old, Modern, New - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
I really like the juxtaposition of this image. On the one side, buildings that are about a century old. Front and Center is the 616 foot tall Highmark building (completed in 1988) with its 124 foot tall pyramid roof and blue spire. Penn Ave running into the distance and on the right side, a completely new construction (or complete renovation).

Pittsburgh during Twilight
Twilight is a magical time. The lights start to fade and the city starts to light up. The blue in the sky was gorgeous despite the heavy cloud cover. I'm looking forward to reshooting this one in the spring or summer.

Rachel Carson Bridge
I was saddened to hear that the art installation is being turned off April 8th. I was very happy to hear that the bridge is then going to be renovated (which I understand it needs quite badly). I'm really hoping they put the lights back up.

At 5:34 AM the International Space Station flew over visible from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania while flying over Canada (north of Lake Huron) and over Maine and over the North Atlantic.
