Cold and Overcast Sunrise - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
This morning I went down to the Duquesne Incline just before sunrise. The blue hue was quite beautiful. I hope this is the last of the snow cover, though looking at the forecast for next week wouldn't place any bets.

PNC Park - Three Days before the Season Opener 2018
I got the chance to go downtown tonight not really knowing where I was going to shoot. Turns out, PNC park was lit up and they were apparently doing testing of the lights and sound system and even the lights on top of the Highmark building. It was also raining which gave the lights this gorgeous atmospheric-ness that I think turned out pretty well.
This is a bit of an unusual perspective on PNC park from beneath the Fort Duquesne Bridge I wasn't able to get too far upriver before the walkway on the city side was completely covered in mud.PNCbaseballPNCParkalleghenypittsburghpennsylvaniariverbridgecloudrainraining

The city was illuminated by the lights from PNC Park during testing before opening day of 2018. I absolutely love the structure of the bridge

Pittsburgh during Twilight
Twilight is a magical time. The lights start to fade and the city starts to light up. The blue in the sky was gorgeous despite the heavy cloud cover. I'm looking forward to reshooting this one in the spring or summer.
I recommend viewing this one as large as you can. The detail is pretty impressive.pittsburghpanoramaskyscraperurbanpittsburghbeautifulcityscapeAppalachiasunsettwilightdark

Rachel Carson Bridge
I was saddened to hear that the art installation is being turned off April 8th. I was very happy to hear that the bridge is then going to be renovated (which I understand it needs quite badly). I'm really hoping they put the lights back up.

The Span of the Roberto Clemente Bridge - Pittsburgh Pennslyvania
This is, without a doubt, one of my favorite bridges in the city. The fact that the city is behind it (as viewed from the North Shore) only helps things. I was hoping to get a cool shot with the snow, but the wind was too strong and the snowflakes were too small to show up as anything other than fog.

Pittsburgh Steam - 02/17/2018
The recent flooding of the Allegheny and Mongehelea rivers lead to flooding of the Pittsburgh steam tunnels. The result was a HUGE cloud of steam rising between 6th and 7th Ave between the Heinz and Benedum Concert Halls. It looked like the apocalypse. Beautiful. Haunting. Surreal.

Rachel Carson Bridge - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
I took this one around 1 AM when the city becomes very quiet. The wind was still and the turbines weren't moving.
The Rachel Carson bridge is home to an installation of wind turbine powered LED light display. I really like the concept, but I wasn't a fan of the color scheme last night with the yellow on the bridge and the red on the Highmark building. Still, I think this photo works pretty well.rachelcarsonbridgepittsburghhighmarkallenghenyriverpennslyvaniawinter
Crossing the River - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
I had the good fortune of capturing the train engine while it was traversing the bridge thus lighting it up for the inside. I also really like the reflections in the water - the river wasn't as reflective as it was a few nights ago, but it was still sufficiently reflective.
The above crop is not a standard 2x3 aspect ratio, most prints will be cropped from the view above.trainbridgepittsburghironrailsrailcityskyscraperalleghenyriverpennsylvania

Roberto Clemente Bridge In the Fog - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
I was passing through the city tonight when I noticed that the fog was heavy enough that the overlook I usually stop at was fogged in. So, instead, I went back down to the bank of the Allegheny River and took another shot of the Roberto Clemente Bridge from the North Shore. I think I'm pretty happy with how this one came out. The river was really smooth yet flowing pretty fast which made for interesting ice streaks.

Monongahela Incline - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
I had the chance to go out for a few hours this evening and get some photos of the city with the goal of not going to the typical North Shore, the overlooks, etc. I think this one fits the bill pretty nicely. The walk down from Mt. Washington was fraught with a very long and relatively steep walkway covered in ice. The view was pretty good.

Pittsburgh Sunrise - January 18, 2018
Sunrise on the West End Overlook. The air temperature was 6 ºF and the wind chill was quite a bit lower than that. The sunrise was beautiful and had I known what I was doing, probably could have gotten a much better photo. As it is, I'm pretty happy with my first attempt.

January Snowstorm - Oakland Pennsylvania
It's been seven months since I took this photo. It's been a truly fantastic summer and I've enjoyed every second of the glorious weather.
And yet. Something draws me back to the brutal coldness. The images of winter are really spectacular. You don't get shots like this in the summer.snowstormwinterstormsnowicepittoaklandpennsylvaniapittsburghuniversitycold
Heinz Chapel at Night
I took this image during the start of the snowstorm on January 12, 2018. The sleet had just begun and I was trying to get the chapel with some kind of atmosphere. Turns out, the multiexposure pretty much got rid of the atmospheric effects I was looking for, but the chapel came out pretty good.

Reflections of the City in the Ice - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
Around 2 AM after shooting for a few hours I decided to call it a night and go and warm up. I opted to shoot at one more location and try and get the city from a bit closer up despite the wind chills starting to fall below -10 ºF. I'm glad I did.

Reflections in Ice (2) - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
This is the last image I took while down in Pittsburgh on Saturday early morning and I have no more from that particular shoot. I was about to leave and thought I should try one more time in case the others don't come out. I think this one is probably the best of all of them actually. I really like the aspect ratio and how wide the shot it while still getting those incredible reflections.

Pittsburgh and the Frozen Rivers - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
Hi folks. I just finished this image, taken from the West End Bridge at around 12:30 AM on January 6, 2018. The temperature was a bit chilly at 1 ºF. The saving grace was that there was little to no wind until I was nearly done.
The moon was out but I didn't go deep enough HDR to fully capture it. The moonrays are real however which I think is pretty cool.

This is a black and white remix of the image I took yesterday. I think it works better since it removes the color distractions from the raw shape of the walkway, bridge etc. Still working on it. Might have another few edits later.

The Bridge at Washington Landing
Tried a new location tonight. The view was pretty nice, particularly since there were no leaves on the trees which would have partially obscured the view. Might have to try this one when it's snowy and the rivers are frozen this winter.
Also, this is facing more or less south. I think I may be able to get an ISS pass in the next coming months. Maybe.pittsburghwashingtonlandingbridgewaterriverskylinecityscapeallegheny
